Welcome to the Alcohol & Drug Council of Tompkins County, Inc. We hope that you find this website useful and interesting. We are here to celebrate recovery from addiction and to assist individuals and families in their efforts to reduce the negative impact of alcohol and drug abuse on their lives. We were created in 1965 by community leaders who were concerned about the abuse of alcohol in Tompkins County. At that time, the organization provided informal counseling to individuals and families affected by alcoholism. In 1982, we acquired a license from the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services to offer professional counseling for problems related to alcohol and drug abuse.
Today, we continue our effort to prevent alcohol and substance abuse through our various programs in the community. Our substance abuse prevention efforts are mainly directed toward middle and high school students through our Peer Program. However, we offer other alcohol and substance abuse prevention services to businesses, colleges, youth detention facilities, human service organizations and the criminal justice system.
Through our outpatient clinic, we provide comprehensive evaluations that are strictly confidential. Based on the comprehensive evaluation, our professional treatment team recommends the most appropriate and effective course of treatment for each individual or family. |

Relapse
I believe there are two kinds or levels of relapse, the mental and the behavioral.
In addicts, one precedes the other. In non-addicts a relapse means the person has returned to old ways of thinking and coping, life has gotten out of hand, and adverse choices and consequences have again raised their ugly heads. If the person is an addict, all this happens and they proceed on to use their drug of choice......MORE >
